1. Introduction

The Center for the Law of the Sea and International Maritime Law was established following Decision no. 551/QĐ-TCCB dated 09/05/2003 of the Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The center is an independent legal entity with its own stamp and account in accordance with Decision no. 509/QĐ-TCCB dated 23/08/2004. The Center’s personnel include experts and collaborators, lecturers, scientists, legal professionals with rich experience in the law of the sea and maritime law, international law…

2. Functions and missions

- Scientific research in the direction of combining basic research and applied research.

- Provide legal assistance and consultancy to domestic and foreign organizations and individuals.

- Participate in teaching undergraduate and graduate programs in Law of the Sea, Maritime Law in Vietnam and abroad.

- Collect, process, exchange and provide information related to the law of the sea, maritime law, international law and related legal fields in accordance with the law.

- Cooperate with foreign organizations and individuals to implement cooperative projects and programs in accordance with the law; cooperate in the fields of education, scientific research and application with local and international partners;

- Perform other tasks assigned by the Rector of the University of Law and the Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

- The Center also creates conditions for the Center's staff to participate in graduate academic programs of the University of Law, academic programs of other education institutions to improve their professional qualifications and skills.

(2) Part of the scientific report of the State-level project on “The Scientific Foundation of Joint Exploitation of Sea Zones in International Law and Vietnam’s Current Situation, 2010 (the part that is not considered confidential information in accordance with the current regulation).

* Scientific and technological products in the 2016-2020 period:

 (1) Research products in the framework of the scientific and technological project at the State level on the legal mechanism for protection of Vietnam’s sovereignty over islands and ocean areas, if the Center is selected for the project in 2016 and requested by the implementing agency.

(2) 02 reference books and other research products on policy and law related to the mission of protecting Vietnam’s sovereignty over islands and ocean areas in the context of the South China Sea dispute, on international experience in resolution of disputes over islands and ocean areas and other matters for international integration and sustainable development strategy related to the law of the sea, international law.

(3) Conduct applied research, participated in the drafting of textbooks and teaching materials for use in the Master's degree program in Law of the Sea and Maritime Management, the High-Quality Bachelor's degree program, Master's and PhD degree programs in International Law at the VNU University of Law.

(4) Research products to use for the development of specialized database system and electronic libraries if approved and funded by the VNU University of Law.
